The taste of Sardinia

The taste of Sardinia
Paulina Grabara

“Sardinia is something else: wider, more than usual, not at all irregular, but fading in the distance, crests of hills as heath, irrelevant, which are losing, perhaps, a small group of peaks … A fascinating space around and distance to travel, nothing finished, nothing definitive, it’s like freedom itself. ” (D.H.Lawrence – Sea and Sardinia)

Cagliari. Perfect place all year round, but there is no better time to plan your visit as during the 3rd Edition of „Cagliari International Wine & Food Festival” on 26th and 27th of July. In the splendid setting of the historical centre of the city of Cagliari, which for the third time, will host an event of such importance and relevance, that best represents the island of Sardinia.

Cagliari, the city of the sun, is an Italian town and the capital of the island of Sardinia, an autonomous region of Italy. Sardinian name of Cagliari “Casteddu” literally means castle. It has about 150,000 inhabitants, while its “metropolitan city” (including Cagliari and 16 other neighboring municipalities) has more than 431,000 inhabitants. You can be sure it will be loud and crowded but this is pure Italy we experience with all our senses?

Cagliari is a unique place, it is undoubtedly one of the most popular tourist destinations in the entire Mediterranean basin. An ancient city with a long history, Cagliari has witnessed the domination of different civilisations and thanks to that it is an unique and rich mixture of different cultures.

Under the buildings of the modern city there is a continuous stratification, attesting the human settlement during about 5000 years, from the Neolithic to the present. It is interesting to find out that Cagliari is older than Rome.

In short we can say that the city was settled by the Phoenicians and mostly developed in the Carthaginian and Roman era. Cagliari was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia from 1324 to 1848. Today the city is a cultural, educational, political and artistic regional centre, known for its varied architecture, Art Nouveau and numerous monuments. Rich history can be witnessed when discovering the beauty of the oldest part of the city – Castello. It is worth to climb one of the towers. Great past is also present in the churches, university building and left parts of fortifications.

Cagliari is also the economic and industrial centre of Sardinia, which has one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean, an international airport. In the last years, in the end, the city of Cagliari has taken a leading role as a hub for cruises from all over the world.

Recently Cagliari has won the Oscar of Italian tourist destination in 2016. Presented in December 2016 at “The Fair Tourism Online” in Florence, the survey based on assessments of more than 400,000 foreign tourists was examining as many as 51 Italian provinces. The ranking revealed Cagliari in first place for the satisfaction of tourists in front of Udine and Catania. In particular, the total score is the positioning of the different cities in specific rankings: Cagliari stands for the shopping, the hotel facilities, the environment, the art, the courtesy of its inhabitants and the kitchen.

This is a result that confirms the work carried out in recent years and rewards the commitment of the sector, whose commitment of the Administration has been decisive, but it is above all an incentive to continue on the path of collaboration and common efforts for beauty and the promotion of this beautiful city.

Cagliari has always been a city that symbiotically lives the sports environment and has recently been awarded the “European City of Sport 2017” award. An important and prestigious goal achieved in full and that it is a result that confirms the work carried out in recent years and rewards the commitment of the sector, whose commitment of the Administration has been decisive, but it is above all an incentive to continue on the path of collaboration and common efforts for beauty and the promotion of our beautiful city.
