Laureatka Oscara, Złotego Globu oraz nagrody Emmy. Gwiazda światowego kina, mająca na swoim koncie role w takich filmach jak „Śniadanie u Tiffany’ ego”, „Sabrina” czy „Rzymskie wakacje”. Będąc na samym szczycie- w 1967 roku podejmuje decyzję o rezygnacji z kariery aktorskiej na rzecz pracy w charakterze ambasadora dobrej woli UNICEF…
„Piękno kobiety nie przejawia się w ubraniach, które nosi, w jej figurze lub sposobie jaki układa włosy. Piękno kobiety musi być widoczne w oczach, ponieważ są one drzwiami do jej serca- miejsca, gdzie mieszka”– powiedziała podczas jednego z wywiadów Hepburn…
Ujmuje nas ona nie tylko swoją skromnością i dobrocią, ale przede wszystkim odwagą. Podczas II wojny światowej, przebywając w Holandii,daje występy taneczne, a zarobione pieniądze przekazuje na walkę z nazistami. W dzień pracuje natomiast jako wolontariuszka w szpitalu. Opiekuje się tam rannym podczas bitwy pod Arnhem brytyjskim żołnierzem. Z Terencem Youngiem spotyka się ponownie po 20 latach, aby zagrać w reżyserowanym przez niego filmie „Doczekać zmroku”.
W latach rozkwitu swojej kariery Hepburn spędza większość swojego wolnego czasu na szlifowaniu talentu. Pobiera lekcje śpiewu i do późnych godzin powtarza swoje kwestie. Sytuacja zmienia się, kiedy w 1960 roku rodzi się jej pierwszy syn- Sean. Macierzyństwo zmienia jej sposób myślenia. W jej wywiadach lub przemówieniach ciągle przewija się jedno pytanie: „Co jest ważniejsze od dzieci?”. Te dylematy wpływają na jej późniejszą decyzję… Postanawia poświęcić się nie tylko swoim dzieciom, ale także tym, które nie miały tyle szczęścia, aby móc wychowywać się w godnych warunkach.
Podczas swojej wieloletniej pracy na rzecz UNICEF-u odwiedza w sumie 20 różnych krajów. W Wenezueli i Ekwadorze pracuje w slumsach i opiekuje się dziećmi. Odwiedza również Etiopię i Bangladesz, gdzie pomaga minimalizować skutki panującego głodu. Jednak to, co widzi w Somalii ogarniętej wojną, przeraża ją na tyle, że mówi o panującej tam sytuacji jak o piekle. Powraca tam jednak wielokrotnie. Jedną z jej ostatnich podróży, jest ta do Turcji, gdzie pomaga szczepić dzieci przeciw powszechnym tam: gruźlicy, krztuścowi, tężcowi, odrze i polio. Oprócz fizycznej pomocy w krajach Globalnego Południa, skupia się przede wszystkim na zbieraniu informacji i przekazywaniu jej później rządowi i innym organizacjom charytatywnym. Dzięki swojej pozycji może wpływać na myślenie ludzi i organizować duże zbiórki pieniędzy. Z pewnością dzięki temu ocalono setki, a nawet tysiące istnień.
Jej decyzja o porzuceniu życia w blasku fleszy wydaje się dla niektórych głupia lub niezrozumiała. Rezygnacja z tego, o czym marzy większość dziewczyn przychodzi jej z łatwością. Opuszcza ukochane kino, jednak jej nowe życie z pewnością przyniesie jej jeszcze większą satysfakcję… Na zdjęciach ze swoich podróży po Afryce czy Południowej Ameryce widzimy tą samą uśmiechniętą dziewczynę. Mimo upływu lat pozostaje naszą Audrey, a w jej oczach pojawia się jeszcze wyraźniejszy błysk.
Podczas posiedzenia ONZ odbywającego się w 1989 roku w Genewie tak mówi o swojej pracy:
„Często zadają mi pytanie: „Co ty tak naprawdę robisz w UNICEF-ie?”. Moim zadaniem jest przede wszystkim przekazywanie informacji. Mam powiadomić świat o potrzebach dzieci. Żeby w pełni zrozumieć wagę tego zagadnienia, warto mieć choćby podstawową wiedzę dotyczącą edukacji, spraw gospodarczych, tradycji religijnych i kultury. Nic o tym nie wiem, ale jestem matką. […] Nadrzędnym celem UNICEF-u jest ochrona dzieci przed głodem, pragnieniem, chorobami, maltretowaniem i śmiercią. Ale dziś mamy do czynienia z jeszcze gorszym zagrożeniem w postaci „nieludzkości człowieka względem ludzi”, z mrocznym aspektem cywilizacji zatruwającej nasze niebo i nasze oceany, niszczącej lasy i zabijającej tysiące wspaniałych zwierząt. A dzieci mają być następne?”
Audrey Hepburn umiera we śnie w 1993 roku. Jednak jej sława nie maleje… 13 lat później suknia, w której występowała w „Śniadaniu u Tiffany’ ego zostaje wylicytowana za 130 tysięcy dolarów, cała kwota zostaje przeznaczona na pomoc humanitarną w Indiach. Kiedy w 2009 roku zostaje zorganizowana kolejna aukcja, nikt nie spodziewa się, że przyniesie ona zawrotną sumę 268,320 tysięcy funtów. Jej życiową misję starają się obecnie kontynuować jej synowie- Sean Hepburn Ferrer i Luca Dotti, którego książka o Audrey niedawno trafiła do księgarni.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Audrey Hepburn completed a four day tour of Somalia and northern Kenya on 24 September – visiting UNICEF-assisted feeding centres and primary health care facilities in Mogadiscio, Kismayo, and Baidoa – to bring world attention to the plight of children and women there. Ms. Hepburn also greeted United Nations peacekeeping troops from Pakistan arriving to Mogadiscio and met with UN Special Representative Mohamed Sahnoun, as well as visiting the USS Tarawa, a US aircraft-carrier stationed off the coast, whose crew donated US$4,000 in support of UNICEF relief work in Somalia.
